A portrait is a collaboration

In a portrait session we collaborate to create a realistic, natural, comfortable representation of who you are at this moment in your life. It should show us your smile, a bit of your personality, the clothes and places you feel comfortable in.

The goal is to create something together that you and/or your family will love having on a wall, to look at every day for years to come.

The good news? You absolutely do not have to love having your picture taken to create a great portrait. Spoiler alert: 86.3% of people hate having their picture taken. Ok, I made that up. But it’s sort of true. For some strange reason, people don’t like standing in darkened studio, in front of a stranger who is pointing eight pounds of metal and glass at them. Crazy, isn’t it?

So that’s why I work very hard to make the whole experience relaxing, easy, and even a bit fun.

Get in Touch

Need some nitty gritty? These are the types of portraits I do:

  • Environmental portraits, which are usually of business people or artists in their “natural environment,” at their workplace or in a location that fits with their vocation or avocation.
  • Studio portraits, in which we work in the more controlled studio environment to get multiple portraits of you against various backdrops.
  • Family portraits can be either in studio or on location. Usually on location is best, as in at the family home or at some place that is of special importance to the couple or family.
  • Headshots are a more limited version of a studio portrait, are rather quick and usually focus on just one “look,” normally before a white or grey background. The intent is to create images for online profiles, printed brochures and the like.
  • Senior portraits are normally shot at a beautiful location or in town, and I work with the parent and student to get a range of images that will satisfy the whole family – from the student’s social media needs to the portrait to hang on grandma’s wall.

Paul is a true professional with an exceptional eye and a fantastic finished product.

I really wish I could give him 10 stars. Paul is a true artist, his work is incredible and it truly shows. He is genuine and talented, he values the clients' needs and executes.

Nadine Budbill

I was pretty nervous for my headshot session, but Paul made it easy and enjoyable, without the goofy embarrassing photographer stuff I remember from school picture day! He was then prompt and attentive in getting me the best images and very responsive to my requests in order to get the edited images just right. It was a pleasure working with Paul and I highly recommend him!

Elise Annes

Vice President for Community Relations / Vermont Land Trust

I recommend Paul E. Richardson as a professional photographer. Paul worked for our non-profit on an outdoor and barn photo shoot and we used his photos for the web, a fundraising case statement and with media relations. His work is aesthetically excellent and he is flexible and easy to work with. We receive many compliments on the pieces where his work appears. We look forward to using his photos and hiring him in the future.

Trish Wolf Brubeck

/ Brubeck Brothers Quartet

Paul has a great eye, and is very talented not only at shooting his subjects, but also at capturing the right light.

Besides being smart, personable and humorous fellow, Paul knows a LOT about getting the right shot from the angles, the lighting, the color... honestly, it's FUN! I had him shoot a 'product' for me and we had a blast and the pictures are awesome. Can't wait to have another shoot!

Diane Maurice-Brault

/ Vermont Lavender

I recently had my product photos done by Paul and the results are truly amazing. He took my skin care products to a new level of professionalism and demonstrated their value... If you want quality, high end professional photos done with years of experience and knowledge, Paul Richardson is the photographer to have for your business.

Bek Zhandossov

/ Portrait Client

Besides great shots of our event, Paul was very responsive, open and creative! He knows the best locations in Montpelier, and his sense of occasion helped us capture very special moments.
